1/14/22 LEO-GLAM Bargaining Recap
Our January 14th session started with a TA on the Ground Rules proposal to guide negotiations—after 11 passes back and forth! While administration wanted to severely limit member testimony, we pressed to remove a fixed endpoint on when testimony could be given. Member testimony is incredibly effective and we look forward to hearing directly from many of you in the coming weeks about how current policies and practices impact you.
We were glad to see that administration affirmed our faculty status and our right to the protections of academic freedom. We are proud of the new proposals that we advanced, which asserted the agency of LACs as professionals who can best decide how and where to accomplish our work, asserted that our workspaces should be accessible, and set guidelines to ensure that those in term appointments are treated fairly.
However, we were dismayed by several other proposals put forward by the Admin bargaining team, which:
Rejected our proposed 6-month probationary period proposal in favor of an onerous 2 year probationary period that does not align with the SPG for most university employees;
Proposed a new class of regular appointment not eligible for promotion, and without clear definition or criteria of how or why this would be applied;
Failed to articulate a clear promotion process, deferring to units to do as they see fit, leading to inconsistency of practice across units.
Highlights of the bargaining session included:
Reached a TA on Ground Rules
LEO-GLAM shared 3 new proposals (Term Appointments, Accessibility & Accommodations, Work Schedules & Locations) and a counter on Academic Rights & Responsibilities
Admin shared 2 Counters (Academic Rights & Responsibilities, Benefits & Benefits Eligibility) and 1 new proposal (Appointment, Promotion & Review)
We are also continuing to hold Impact Bargaining negotiations related to COVID-19 with admin in separate sessions. We will present a bargaining update during the GMM on the afternoon of January 20th, and hope to see you there, as well asat bargaining next Friday.
