5/20/22 LEO-GLAM Bargaining Recap

Our May 20th session featured a TA on Package #8 (Promotion; Appointments & Annual Reviews) that cements four equal ranks for all members of our bargaining unit, a major win! We were also able to secure longer notification periods for members on term appointments—a minimum of 4 months of notice for 1-year terms, and 6 months’ notice for those on longer term appointments. We fought hard for the members on term appointments who experienced the precarity and hardships associated with a lack of notice about whether their positions would continue, and we prevailed!

From our bargaining surveys, we know how important achieving a fair and standardized promotion process is for members. We are proud to say that we now have a clear and consistent promotion process for all LACs in every unit, with a detailed timeline, required items for the dossier, and criteria for evaluation. We believe the process outlined in this article will provide greater equity, accountability, and transparency in how the promotion process is applied across units. We encourage you to attend unit and department meetings in the next few weeks to learn more. As a reminder, the terms of the Promotion article (along with the rest of the contract) do not go into effect until you, the membership, vote to ratify our contract.

On the other hand, the salary counter that we received was once again deeply disappointing, as it failed to produce material improvements for underpaid LACs or to significantly address annual increases. Administration continues to aim for the bottom of the payscale, tethering future salaries to the salaries of the lowest paid members of our unit. We worked hard to restructure our proposal in order to address both compression and our historically low salaries compared to peer institutions, while admin continues to push for the status quo.

Highlights of the bargaining session:

  • We reached a TA on Package #8 (Promotion; Appointments & Annual Reviews) bringing our total TA count to 36!

  • LEO-GLAM passed counters on Professional Development and Package #8

  • Admin passed counters on Package #8, Salary, and Recognition

There are only 3 articles left on the table, but they are all consequential, and bargaining will likely be eventful in the coming weeks. We look forward to seeing you at Bargaining again on Friday, May 27!
