Lecturer Bargaining Update: Bargaining Recap for 1/26/2024

Members of the 2023-24 Bargaining team hold up round yellow "We are LEO" signs at the Fall 2023 Bargaining Retreat.

Our hardworking LEO 2023-24 Bargaining Team at their Bargaining Retreat in the Fall

LEO met with management last Friday at the Michigan League. Be sure to join us for bargaining on North Campus this Friday, February 2nd at Pierpont Commons in the East Room, starting at 9am. Register here to come and show your support!

In some exciting news, we reached tentative agreements on Article II: Non-Discrimination and MOU 11: Support for International Lecturers! Article II: Non-Discrimination will now include language around caste discrimination. We were finally able to secure language around the content and notification of the International Lecturer Orientation.

We’ve also dropped MOU E: Course Banking as it has moved to an MOU outside of the contract for Dearborn CASL only. The MOU now provides a process that fast tracks overload approval for all lecturers and allows for credit or service balancing for Lecturers III/IV to address the 3 to 4 credit conversion in the college.

LEO also sent counter proposals on Article XXI: Harassment, Article XXVI: Faculty Support, and Article XXVIII: Workload. We also passed back our proposal on MOU C: Principal Investigators and coupled that with dropping our MOU A: Unit Accretion. Alongside the proposal we had a number of statements from members read or presented at the table from lecturers who were currently serving as PI’s or would benefit from the ability to serve as PI because they are currently doing the work of a PI without the title. We heard from Bargaining Team member Jamie Wraight and LEO Stamps lecturer Melanie Manos. Our team manager read statements from an anonymous lecturer who serves as a PI because she was able to negotiate in her hiring and also Nina White who holds a researcher position in addition to her lecturer appointment to serve as PI.

We had some back and forth on Article XXVII: Posting, Hiring, and Notification and also Article XIX: Performance Evaluation. We are getting closer to a tentative agreement on Article XIX but still have a couple sticking points.

LEO received counter proposals regarding Article XIII: Discontinuance of Programs and a couple of other placeholders for the Preamble and Term of the Agreement. We also received counters on MOU 12: Increased Diversity in Hiring which shows promise in getting to agreement and Article XI: Appointments, Major Review, and Renewal. We are waiting to get a corrected version of Article XI but there was a ton of rearranging done to the article in addition to changing the dates for notification to significantly later, which is a major concern for our members.

This week on Friday, February 2nd we will bargain on North Campus at Pierpont Commons in the East Room, starting at 9am. RSVP to support your bargaining team!

Be sure to follow our proposals on LEO’s Public Proposal Tracker.
