Lecturer Bargaining Update: Bargaining Recap for 6/23/21

No Bargaining 6/25 but Still Building Power

We will not be bargaining tomorrow. The next bargaining session will be Wednesday, June 30th. Though we have made a lot of progress with most proposals reaching Tentative Agreements (TA’s), it takes time for both sides to do the work to be able to reach viable compromises. We will be giving the Bargaining Teams more time between sessions to do that work on the remaining proposals. For LEO that also means building our collective power and our ability to pressure Management to make greater movement at the table.

This past Wednesday’s bargaining was disappointing but also clarifying. We received 5 counter-proposals from Management:

  • In the morning we got the MoU on Felony Disclosure, where they explicitly linked the ability to discipline or dismiss someone to their job duties, not the felony charge itself. They were not willing to accept our additional MoUs on Felony Disclosure Implementation or Support for Survivors although they noted that many of the items in the MoUs were already in progress.

  • With the Spring/Summer Salaries they returned to the original language in the contract, which gives them the ability to change Spring/Summer pay unilaterally.

  • Professional Development was given back to us with no changes from their last proposal.

  • MoU: Leapfrogging was struck completely, to our great disappointment, as we have done much work together on this piece.

  • Finally, Salary only had a slight change in the form of $500 on starting pay for Dearborn & Flint in Year 2 and ¼ % more on annual raises, also in Year 2. Clearly, this salary proposal is far from adequate.

Infographic showing that the number of administrators making over $100,000 has tripled in total numbers and financial outlay, outpacing salary increases to lecturers.
