Lecturer Bargaining Update: Bargaining Recap for 2/23/2024

LEO met with management last Friday in Palmer Commons in Ann Arbor. This week we will not be bargaining due to the spring break. We will bargain again on Friday, March 8th in Palmer Commons in the Great Lakes South/Central Room, starting at 9am. RSVP to support your bargaining team!

The high point of the day was reaching tentative agreements on Appendix A, Increased Diversity in Hiring, Information, Job Security, and Principal Investigators and we saw some movement on the Workload article. We were able to secure an improved special conference to increase diversity in lecturer hiring. In the Information article, we will now receive annual reports of upcoming reviews for each lecturer. This will be extremely helpful in ensuring our lecturers receive timely reviews. The new Job Security proposal will extend job security protections for those who are underemployed and long-serving lecturers. Finally, the Principal Investigator tentative agreement was an area where previously management said there would be no movement. However, after hearing testimony from lecturers at the table we were able to get a pathway to lecturers serving as PIs written into the contract! This will allow lecturers to apply for grants, which is a very exciting development.

We also received counter proposals on the Housing Committee (completely struck), Teaching Professor (returned to 2021 language), Assistance Fund for International Lecs (completely struck), Leaves of Absence without Pay (no further movement), and Summer Salaries (basically returned to 2021 language). We received back proposals on Health and Safety and Faculty Support, which management says they have no further movement on.

Finally, we passed back a counter of Lecturer Feedback for Supervisors now in the form of an MOU for LSA. The counter adds titles to be included alongside the departments for feedback and also a pilot program in January of 2025.

Be sure to follow our proposals on LEO’s Public Proposal Tracker.
