Lecturer Bargaining Update: Bargaining Recap for 1/19/2024

On a beautiful snowy Friday, the majority of the LEO Bargaining Team made it to North Campus while the admin team participated through Zoom. This Friday, January 26th we will bargain in the Michigan League in the Vandenberg Room, starting at 9am. RSVP and support our bargaining efforts!

In the morning, LEO caucused to discuss Article XIX: Performance Evaluation and MOU 11: Support for International Lecturers.

After discussing MOU 11 with members of the International Caucus, we returned to our language that requires all international lecturers to be invited to the orientation and requires 2 weeks notice. We dropped the language around the union’s inclusion in the orientation and shifted some language around access to information about health insurance, retirement, and legal services.

We had a productive small group session around Performance Evaluation and were able to pass a counter in the afternoon that captured the safeguards we felt were necessary to help avoid blindsiding in the review process.

LEO sent counter proposals regarding Article II: Non-Discrimination and Article XXII: Health and Safety. We moved caste from the list of protected categories but still included caste-discrimination in the non-discrimination article. In Health & Safety, we accepted the Employers’ offer of special conference around health and safety concerns but maintained some language around trainings and posting of emergency protocols. We also included some language around access to gender-neutral bathrooms that we borrowed from the GLAM contract.

We also sent back Article XXVII: Posting, Hiring, and Notification, which we hope is close to a tentative agreement after multiple passes.

LEO received counter proposals from admin regarding Article XXVIII: Workload, Article XXVI: Faculty Support, MOU 9: Accommodations for Employees with Disabilities, MOU 14: Academic Calendar Changes, and clean up of MOUs that are now being moved into the main body of the contract.

LEO and management reached a tentative agreement on MOU 7: Assignment of Lecturer III/IV Duties. This will allow Lecturer I/IIs who have been performing the duties of Lecturer III/IVs for the last 3 out of 4 fall and winter semesters to apply for reclassification to Lecturer III/IV.

Join us again this Friday in the Michigan League in the Vandenberg Room. Register to attend!
