Lecturer Layoff Resources

The Lecturer CBA requires resources to be provided to those on layoff.

  • In the case of layoff, lecturers should receive the Layoff Resource Guide, which explains the rights afforded to lecturers on layoff.

Lecturer Funds & Grants

The Lecturer CBA created two funds that lecturers on all 3 campuses may apply for.

  • As a result of our recent negotiations, we have made some positive changes to the LEO Professional Development Funds available to lecturers on all three campuses. We hope many of you will apply.

The committees on each campus are now required to review applications no less than five times per year.

Each lecturer can now receive up to $2500, up from $1500. You can apply to the fund more than once until you reach the individual maximum.

When applying, you will increase your chances of securing funds if you show, concretely and specifically, how the proposed activity will benefit your teaching.

To apply in Ann Arbor, go here. To apply in Dearborn, go here. To apply in Flint, go here.

  • This fund can provide lecturers seeking to better engage in inclusive teaching practices up to $1,500 in support for their proposals, and there is a wide range of how one can use the funds. Applications for grants must be submitted on or before May 15th for Dearborn and Ann Arbor campuses, though applications can be submitted at any time if there are funds available at all campuses.

Student Scholarships

LEO sponsors scholarships for students on each of the three campuses of the University of Michigan.

  • The LEO Union Scholarship on Ann Arbor campus is for undergraduate and graduate students who are dependents of a member of a union. Two $1,000 scholarships are awarded each year. This scholarship is administered by the Office of Financial Aid. See here to apply for the 2022/2023 academic year. The deadline is February 1.

  • UM-Dearborn students can apply for a LEO-sponsored scholarship through the campus Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships website. $2,000 in scholarships are awarded each year, and the deadline to apply is March 1 for the following academic year.

  • Students on the UM-Flint campus can apply for a LEO-sponsored scholarship via the campus’s general scholarship application. $2,000 in scholarships are awarded each year, and each scholarship will be at least $500 and no more than $1,000. Under question 2.9 of the form, dependents of union members may indicate their status as such and submit an additional essay to apply for the LEO scholarship. Preference is given first to dependents of LEO members.

Mutual Aid Resources

Support for individual LEO-GLAM members.

  • The Mutual Aid committee works to support individual LEO-GLAM members, and build a non-hierarchical support structure among union members and others working in GLAM and/or other campus units. The committee aims to ensure members are comfortable asking for and offering help. We help to facilitate mutual aid of multiple types - person-to-person/direct assistance and sharing of resources, and monetary aid facilitated by the union. Requests or offers can be sent to mutualaidgroup@leounion.org  OR posted in the #mutual-aid-requests-and-offers Slack channel.
