Lecturer Bargaining Update: Update from 8/26/21 & Day 2 of Move-In Actions
Today we received admin’s counter proposal. They did not move on any of the non-salary issues, and the salary counter was terrible.
Here are the numbers:
NO change on mins, 51K all three years in AA; 43,45, 48K in D/F for the three years. (+2K for the LIII/IV track)
No change in longevity, the $90 million for Dearborn/Flint, or wage theft.
On annual raises, they actually went down. Admin's last round of numbers in the parentheses and current proposal in bold:
AA: 2.5 (2.5), 3.3 (3.5), 3.5 (3.75)
D/F: 2 (2), 2.5 (3), 3.25 (3.5)
On the MoU for those with major reviews, they did away with the 7% or a fixed amount, whichever is less, and just went to the fixed amount. These are minimum salaries, so everyone would be brought up to these numbers as of 9/1/21. This approach benefits some, especially LIIs who have had two major reviews on lower starting pay. This time they included Ann Arbor Lecs in the MoU, which is positive for the folks who got leapfrogged due to the big increases in the last contract.
Ann Arbor
Lec II w/ 1 MR- $55,000
Lec II w/ 2 MR- $61,000
Lec IV w/ 1 MR- $57,000
Lec IV w/ 2 MR- $63,000
Dearborn/ Flint
*The last admin proposal numbers in parentheses and current proposal in bold.
Lec II w/ 1 MR- $45,000 (7% or 46K, whichever is lower)
Lec II w/ 2 MR- $50,000 (7% or 51K, same)
Lec IV w/ 1 MR- $47,000 (7% or 48K, same)
Lec IV w/ 2 MR- $52,000 (7% or 53K, same)
In many ways, this proposal is worse than their last proposal, with the decreases in annual raises. We need to show them that we will not settle for less than we deserve. Two immediate things you can do are sign the strike pledge and join the informational picket tomorrow.
Around 100 lecturers and community allies, including members of the Graduate Employees Organization, undergraduate students, tenure-track, and other campus community members, joined the informational picket lines held today during the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor’s campus move-in from 10am-2pm.
We hope to see you tomorrow 10am-2pm, at the dorms on Observatory Street in Ann Arbor. Please RSVP at bit.ly/LEOMOVEIN. If you plan to come, we recommend reviewing this campus map [link] because parking will be tight.
A handful of members have been asked by their departments about their plans in case LEO votes to call a strike. Our belief is that this is none of their business, and moreover that the question is unlawful. We suggest the following answer: “At the advice of the Union’s attorney, I respectfully decline to respond.”
Our next bargaining session will be held on Tuesday, August 31st at 5:30pm.
